Faith / Fear - Marmalade
This song was recorded in the early 90’s at Brilliant Studios in San Francisco by engineer David Plank onto the studio’s 2-inch 24-track Studer.
By far the heaviest song we wrote as a band, Faith/Fear was actually great fun to record. The drums were set up on one side of Brilliant’s incredibly large recording space and I remember that each hit sounded like an explosion. My kit consisted of relatively small sized shells (toms were 10”,12” & 15”, a 5” x 14” snare & a 22” kick drum) – but they sound absolutely huge!
Guitar was recorded through a single distortion pedal straight into a fully-cranked tweed Fender Bassman amp. Bass was recorded through an Ampeg SVT amp and cabinet.
We recorded several takes of lead guitar for the outro with the idea of picking the best bits and combining them into one master take. However, when we started running out of time during the final mix, we had no choice but to leave all the takes in. The resulting wall of guitars is actually one of my favorite parts of the song and always brings a sly grin to my face.
Marmalade didn’t last too long, unfortunately. I hurt my wrist after playing a show in Austin, TX, and Miles quit the band before I fully recovered. He found success soon after with his next band, Fastball. Andrew and I went on to form Misc M.
Miles Zuniga - vocals, guitar
Andrew Stess - bass
Ian D. Thomas - drums
